I'm in the lovely city of San Francisco for O'Relly's Web 2.0 Expo, and I'll be capturing highlights. First impressions:
- 10,000 attendees!
- getting a badge this morning was a mobfest
- Stowe Boyd knows his stuff
Notable points from Stowe's talk, "Building Social Apps":
- "It was blogging what done this to me."
- Social tools are software intended to shape culture
- "The Web is a new third space, and humanity's only real hope."
- Social = me first (argue all you want)
- "The buddy list is the center of the universe."
- Social apps: the world IM has made
- "I am made greater by the sum of my connections"
- Me, Mine, Market - structural way of thinking about social apps
- User story: I need ... Who is like me, and knows where to get it, Where Can I Buy?
- "Any game can be gamed."
On a break now ..
More points:
- Swarm intelligence = wisdom of the crowds
- swarmth = wisdom of crowds applied to identity and reputation
- You can't get it unless you're using it (impossible to learn karate by reading a book -- take a class)
- Tags are inherently social -- shared ways of thinking and speaking.
- Keywords are pre-determined things in the system we know about, used for search and navigation
- UGC is an annoying term used by conventional media -- 'Monetize all those eyeballs with user generated content.
- Discovery of self is the fundamental act of social applications. The thing people are looking for is a red herring. Things discovered in places through people lead to self-discovery
- You can't figure out who you are without people. The results are ad-hocs assemblages of people with similar interests - groups.
